Casts of each side of a medal commemorating the opening of the channel to Newport, 10 February, 1831 by the Tees Navigation Company. Obverse: Starboard bow view of a brig under sail. Legend: (outer) 'TEES NAVIGATION COMPY . MELIORA SPERAMUS'; (inner) 'INCORPORATED BY ACT OF PARLT. 1808'. Reverse: View of the new channel with shipping, hills in the distance. Legend: 'IN COMMEMORATION OF THE OPENING OF THE NEW CHANNEL TO NEWPORT ON THE 10 FEB 1831'. Exergue: 'AND OTHER IMPROVEMENTS FOR DEEPENING & STRAIGHTENING THE REST OF THE CHANNEL OF THE RIVER BETWEEN STOCKTON & THE SEA.' The two casts are mounted on an emulsioned plywood backboard with a label.
