Medal cast

Two casts, obverse and reverse, of a medal commemorating the attempted invasion of Scotland in 1708. Obverse: Bust of Queen Anne (left) lovelock on left shoulder, her gown fastened with a brooch in front. Legend: 'ANNA . DEI . GRA : MAG : BR : FRA : ET : HIB : REGINA'. Reverse: Anne in a chariot drawn by two sea-horses, brandishing her trident against two fugitive winged monsters with fleurs-de-lis on their heads. Legend: 'MIHI SORTE DATVM' (To me it is allotted). Exergue: 'MATVRATE FVGAM REGIQVE HAEC DICITE VESTRO . NON ILLI IMPERIVM PELAGI . 1708' (Speed your flight and tell this to your king, the Empire of the Sea has not been allotted to him.)
