Medal cast

Two casts, obverse and reverse, of a commemorative medal. Obverse: Bust of William III in armour. Legend: 'GVILIELMVS . III . D . G . MAG . BRIT . FRAN . ET . HIB . REX'. Reverse: William as a Roman warrior, bearing his armorial shield, overturns an obelisk erected to the naval glory of France; the top is surmounted by a naval crown and drooping lilies; the front is ornamented with a lauriated trident and the pedestal with a sun setting behind the sea. Round the base are the arms and flags of France and Turkey. Behind, a sea fight with distant views of 'BARFLEUR' and 'WIGHT'. Legend: 'MINC OCCIDIT UNDIS' (Thus it sets behind the waves). Exergue: 'GALLIS FOEDA STRAGE MARI EIECTIS 29 . May .1692' (The French driven from the sea by a disgraceful defeat).
