After a cruel war, which broke out in 1652, a settlement having twice failed, between the government of the republics of England and the Netherlands during which large fleets on both sides fought six bloody battles in the North Sea and two in the Mediterranean, peace was re-establishes on the basis of the old alliance by the grace of the great and good God, under the auspices of Oliver, Protector of Great Britain and the States of the United Provinces. In everlasting memory of this peace, the best of gifts, this monument was made by the Senate and people of Amsterdam.)
