A daguerreotype, photographic miniature. A half-length portrait of Engineer Thomas Baldwin, Royal Navy. Baldwin is shown looking to his left and in uniform. The sitter is wearing a hat with a badge, a dark jacket with gold coloured buttons, a cream waistcoat and a white shirt with high stiff collar. The sitter is wearing a neck cloth and a lanyard.
Thomas Baldwin was promoted to Engineer First Class (later changed to the new rank of Engineer in January 1865) on 16 April 1861. He retired physically unfit on 7 December 1877. [See TNA, ADM 196/23].
The photograph is tinted and framed by a textured gold mount with an arch-shaped aperture. The daguerreotype is held within a leather-covered wooden-framed case lined in velvet. The lid has become detached and is catalogued as ZBA 7497.1.
