Medal cast

Two casts, obverse and reverse, of a commemorative medal. Obverse: The coat of arms with helmet and scrolls, surmounted by a crest of Neptune with an arrow in hand, of Van Gelder; an inscribed compartment below, 'Gedagtenis Van Jonkh IAN PAVLZ van GELDER Capt. op't bed van eer gestorven den 21 Aug. Ao. 1673, out 26 Jaren'. (In memory of Jonkheer John, son of Paul Van Gelder, Captain dead on the bed of honour, 26 Aug. 1673, aged twenty-six years). Legend (incuse): 'VAN GELDER SZEEVOOGDS SOON EN HVLP ENEER BLEEF DOODT DOEN VIERMAAL'T FRANS EN BRITS GEWELT VOOR HOLLAND VLOOT' (Van Gelder, the son, support and honour of The Admiral perished in the battle in which the French and English forces four times flew before the Dutch). Reverse: A naval action. Legend (incuse): 'DE VADER WON DE SLAG DE ZOON VERLOOR ZYN BLOED DE WINST IS DIER GEKOGT T VERLIES IS WEL GEBOET' (The father won the fight, the son lost his life; the gain is dearly bought, the loss is well repaid).
