Two casts, obverse and reverse, of a commemorative medal. Obverse: Dutch East Indiaman. Reverse: Inscription within a rope border: 'ter gedachtenisse vaa de gede diensten aan de oostindische Compe deser Landen gepresteert door de E: Johannis de Hertog zalr.geda. geweert zynde Opperkoopman ende Ao.1689 als Opperhoofte oover de naascheepen tot seeven in getal daar onder twee Franche Prysen aan de Caap de goede hoop verovert van daar herwaarts aan vertrocken Doch eenige wynige tyd voor desselfs arrivement in dese landen op de ryse overleeden in dese penning doen maaken en aan desselfs Vader vereert.' (In remembrance of the good services rendered to the East India Company established in this country by the noble John de Hertog of happy memory, Chief Merchant and commander of the last fleet of the year 1689, consisting of seven good ships, two of which were French prizes captured at the Cape of Good Hope, who died a short time before reaching this country, this medal has been presented to his father.)
