Medal cast
Two casts, obverse and reverse, of a naval reward. Obverse: Erected on a beach near the sea, a trident from which suspended a wreath and a staff with a swallow tailed pendant. Heavenly rays above. At the foot an anchor, a rudder with the arms of Amsterdam, a scroll and a large medal.. Legend: 'VADERLANDS-LIEFDE ERKENT'. Exergue: 'COMM. ter aanmoediging der Zeedienst. 1796'. (Patriotism rewarded, Committee for the encouragement of naval service). Reverse: Within an oak and laurel wreath: 'GERHARDS OTTEMA'. Cast from a silver medal in the Royal Collection at the Hague.
