Tobacco box base
A circular box made of stamped gilt brass. Around the sides are eight panels depicting (a) a lion (b) a drum, sword and banners (c) a naval crown, trident and steering oar with oak branches behind (d) the Union shield, a rudder and oak leaves (e) three guns, shot, a Union flag, anchor and oak branches (f) a gun and naval trophies (g) a ship's stern (h) an anchor. The base has a border of key pattern and beading. In the centre is inscribed within oak branches 'CONQUEROR AT ABOUKIR 1 AUGT 1798. COPENHAGEN 2 APRIL 1801 TRAFALGAR 21 OCTR 1805 WHERE HE GLORIOUSLY FELL'. It is signed by the makers on the base 'M & P FECIT'.
