A hand-tinted ambrotype (also known as wet collodion positive), photographic miniature. A half-length portrait of Joseph Edwin Moore. He is wearing a dark jacket and shirt with a blue scarf. Moore is looking at the camera. He is believed to have run away to sea aged 13 and later joined the Royal Navy, obtaining the rank of Petty Officer.

The mount is patterned and has an oval aperture. The frame gold and textured.
