Dumra (1946); Merchant vessel; Passenger/cargo liner

Scale: 1:48. A large, cased, exhibition model, probably made by Barclay, Curle & Co. Ltd., the builder of the actual vessel. The ‘Dumra’ (1946) was built for the British India Steam Navigation Co. (BI), for use on its India – Persian Gulf service.

The first of four ‘D’-class vessels delivered to BI after the war, ‘Dumra’ initially carried 20 first-class, 30 second-class, and 1537 deck passengers. The four ships in the class – ‘Dara’, ‘Daressa’, ‘Dumra’, and ‘Dwarka’ – maintained a weekly service from Bombay (Mumbai) to Basra until the 1960s.

In 1971 management and operation of these ships was transferred to P&O General Cargo Division. ‘Dumra’ was sold five years later to Damodar Bulk Carriers Ltd., India, renamed ‘Daman’, and ran for a further four years before being scrapped in 1979.
