Ravensworth (1856); Cargo vessel; Barque
Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of the three-masted barque ‘Ravensworth’ (1856) decked and fully equipped with modern rigging added in 1979. Built by Graddy and Lamb of Newcastle in 1856, the ‘Ravensworth’ measured 131 feet in length by 29 feet in the beam and had a tonnage of 508 gross.
Owned by Hodgson & Co., Newcastle, it epitomizes the wooden sailing vessels in which the greatest part of the world’s trade was carried until late in the 19th century. Built for the Far East trade, it spent its first ten years sailing from the Tyne to India and Australia. It was whilst on passage from Bangkok to Falmouth under a military charter in 1869, the ‘Ravensworth’ foundered in the Indian Ocean carrying a cargo of rice and sugar.
