Lady Strathcona (1904); Cargo vessel
Scale: 1:96. A mirror-backed half hull model of the starboard side of the Lady Strathcona (1904), made entirely in wood with gold and silver-plated metal fittings and painted in realistic colours. The hull is carved in wood, flat-bottomed with a bilge keel, and painted dark pink below the waterline and black above. The deck layout is a three-island configuration, with all the decks painted white or covered in a white material. Some of the decks have been scored with black ink to resemble planking. All ventilators are painted cream and the single funnel is painted black. The foredeck details include anchor winch gear, and ventilator. On the forward cargo deck there are two rectangular hatches with covers and a derrick mast positioned between them. The main superstructure is positioned amidships and features include accommodation on the starboard main deck indicated by a row of portholes, promenade deck above with an enclosed bridge house forward, and enclosed pilot house on the boat deck on which two white-painted boats are stowed. There are open bridge wings either side of the pilot house. There are two further rectangular cargo hatches on the aft cargo deck with a derrick mast positioned between them. The aft deck fittings include a secondary wheel and steering mechanism. The model is displayed in its original glazed display case, mounted to a surface-silvered mirror. On plaque inside display case: "Steel screw steamer 'Lady Strathcona' built by Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Co. LTD. Newcastle on Tyne".
