Norman (1854); Passenger/cargo vessel

Scale: 1:48. A model of the Norman (1854) made of wood which has been painted in realistic colours. The lower hull is finished in a flesh pink with the draught marks at the bow and stern and the rudder and propeller are outlined in black ink. The upper hull is finished in black with a pair of horizontal white lines running from bow to stern and finished with a white gunwale capping. The bow is missing its figurehead and is decorated with a trailboard with the ship's name above. The stern and quarter galleries are picked out in gold paint with the six windows painted blue whilst above is the ship's name in gold. On the deck the vessel is fitted with a single bowsprit and three stump masts together with a single tan coloured funnel which has been cut down. The green coloured deck is complete with four main blocks of accommodation all of which have their portholes, doors, and panels drawn on in black ink, the roofs of which are outlined with a wooden surround. There are three cargo hatches on deck all of which are painted black with a companionway and two small forecastle stores in the bow. The hull is mounted on a rear silvered mirror with angled mirrors at either end with a blue velvet base and brass plaque all of which are fitted inside a glazed mahogany display case. The plaque is inscribed: 'SS Norman Length 180' 0" Breadth 26' 0" Depth 16' 4" Chas Lingley Shipbuilder Deptford 1854'.
