Steel Sailing Ship No 210 (1886)
Scale: 1:48. A half block model of a steam sailing ship (1886). The model is made largely from wood with metal fittings, some of which are silver plated. The hull has been made in bread-and-butter fashion and has been painted a pink colour below the waterline whilst the upperworks are painted black with a white band painted horizontally and picked out with nineteen fake gunports. The maindeck is finished in a creamy white with the individual planks marked on in black ink. The same format applies for the forecastle and quarter decks but they are finished in natural varnished wood. The draught marks have been inked on at the bow just below a carved female figurehead in robes with a trailboard which is painted white. The stern is complete with the rudder and its fittings, together with a set of preventor chains. There are three stump masts and a full bowsprit which are made of natural varnished wood. The forecastle deck is fitted with a cathead, anchor and studded link, a davit, four sets of bollards, a single capstan, wooden pinrails, and a fairlead. The maindeck is fitted with a variety of fixtures, notable ones include: two steam cargo winches, three cargo hatches, a set of bilge pumps, lifestock coops, bollards, a single small capstan, two large deckhouses complete with a steam donkey engine, three boats, two rigged on skids, and one double ended lifeboat rigged to davits. The quarter deck is complete with a double steering wheel and box, a binnacle, a combined skylight and seat, a single capstan, a ventilator cowling, a pair of bollards, and a single fairlead.
The whole model is mounted on a rear silvered mirror to the waterline with a black wooden section below. There are also a pair of angled mirrors at the bow and stern with the base of the case finished in a dark blue velvet. The whole case is made from a stained mahogany which has been polished and is complete with a moulded foot to allow it to be mounted on a wall or rest on a shelf. There is a plaque mounted to the back of the case which reads: 'Steel sailing ship No210 Dimensions Length Keel and fore rake 261'-0" Breadth 23'-3" Depth 23'-6" Tonnage 1750 Tons The Clyde Shipbuilding & Engineering Co.
