John E Hyde (1951); Merchant vessel; Cargo vessel; Bulk carrier

Scale: 1:150. This model depicts the same vessel as another model in the Museum’s collection (SLR1645), which shows the ‘John E Hyde' (1951) as originally built in Sweden as an oil tanker. In this model, the vessel is portrayed following her conversion in 1961 to a bulk carrier for Rederi A/B Tankoil of Gothenburg.

The Japanese shipyard, Kure Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, lengthened and widened the ‘John E Hyde's’ hull and strengthened the holds to take bulk cargoes. Only large shipyards can undertake this sort of complicated conversion, which involves cutting a ship in halves both longitudinally and transversely and building in additional sections. The rebuilt ‘John E Hyde', considerably larger than before, remained a Swedish-owned ship until its sale in 1965 to Sheldon Bulk Carriers Inc. and it was renamed ‘Silver Pagoda’.
