J. & S. Seaward and Capel engine for the paddle sloop HMS Gorgon (1837)
Scale: 1:24. A working model of an engine manufactured by J. & S. Seaward and Capel for the paddle sloop HMS Gorgon (1837). The model depicts a section of the direct acting fixed cylinder engine. The model has been made entirely in metal, the two cylinders and their mountings have been made in brass and other details such as the crankshaft has been made in steel. Parts of the model have been painted green, and the paddle wheel is painted bright red. The model is mounted on a wooden baseboard with rounded corners and painted black. There are two engraved brass plaques mounted at either end of the baseboard which read "Model of the Gorgon's Engines of 520 Horse Power by J & S. Seaward & Capel London, 1838" and "Presented to the Royal Naval College by the Earl of Minto GCB 1841".
