Esso Lancashire; Cargo vessel; Oil tanker

Scale: 1:100. A contemporary full hull model of the 'Esso Lancashire' (1962), an oil tanker. Model is decked, equipped and rigged, and built in ‘bread and butter’ fashion in the builder’s style. The hull is inscribed with the name ‘Esso Lancashire’ on the port and starboard bows and superstructure, and ‘Esso Lancashire London’ on port and starboard stern quarters. The funnel is marked with the company logo ‘Esso’ and ‘No smoking’ is marked on deck.

The ‘Esso Lancashire’ was built by Kockums Mekaniska Verkstads AB, Malmö, Sweden and was the third of six county-class vessels. Measuring 861 feet in length by 112 feet in the beam, it has a tonnage of 49397 gross. At the time of building, these were the largest tankers able to berth at the Fawley oil refinery on Southampton Water. In 1964, a new bulbous bow was fitted to improve the hull shape and hence the vessels performance. The accommodation for officers and ratings was fully air-conditioned, with each man having his own cabin. In 1975 the vessel was sold and renamed ‘Petrola XXVIII’, and in 1978 it was broken up at Barcelona, Spain.
