SS Chalister (1913); Cargo vessel

Scale: 1:48. A mirror backed builder's half model of the 'Chalister' (1913), a powered general cargo ship. The hull is made largely of wood in bread and butter fashion and complete with metal fittings most of which are gold and silver plated. The lower hull is painted a brick red with a pinkish red band along the waterline with the upper works to the bulwarks finished in a black gloss. There is a plimsoll line amidships, draught marks at the bow and on the aft edge of the stern frame between the rudder and the four bladed propeller, which has been plated in gold. All decks are finished in natural wood and varnished with the individual deck plating seams marked on in black ink. The small forecastle deck is fitted with an anchor winch and gear, ventilator cowlings and several sets of bollards and fairleads. There are six cargo hatches along the main deck all of which are served by a variety of cranes and derricks rigged and operated from the two masts and individual posts. The bridge and charthouse are roughly amidships with the single black funnel mounted just aft and on top of the engine room accommodation block. Other notable fittings include two lifeboats painted black and rigged in davits, a variety of ventilator cowlings, a double wheel for emergency steering at the stern and an accommodation ladder rigged amidships over the side. Name inscribed "Chalister" on bow. The whole model is mounted on a surface silvered mirror within a wooden mahogany glazed display case complete with a moulded edges on the base and top panels. Plaque inscribed "Chalister 440 x 54' - 6" x 28' - 6" Moulded Built for A H & E. Gunn Cardiff By David & William Henderson & Co Ltd Glasgow 1913".
