Madras (1864); Cargo vessel

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary hull block model of the single-screw steamer ‘Madras’ (1864) mounted in its original glazed wooden case complete with two plaques. The hull is fitted with stump masts and funnel, while on deck are lifeboats rigged in davits, a wheel and compass binnacle, and a deckhouse amidships.

The ‘Madras’ was built by W. Simons of Renfrew, Scotland, for the British Steam Navigation Company and measured 226 feet in length by 68 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 680 gross. From 1864 she was employed on the Burma – Madras service until 1884 when she went aground between Rangoon and Penang. After being written off by the underwriters, salvaged and repaired, the ‘Madras’ was repurchased by British India Co. and put on the Madras – Colombo coastal route. She was later sold for breaking in 1891.
