Volador

Scale:1:12. A contemporary half block model of the racing yacht Volador (1886). The hull has been built in bread and butter fashion with contrasting horizontal layers of wood used to illustrate both the various waterlines as well as to accentuate the curves of the underwater hull form. The topside of hull is painted black and is complete with a clipper bow with a small shield and trailboard decoration. The stern has a long overhanging counter finishing in a small angle transom below which is a deep curved keel fitted with a rudder. There is a flush deck which is fitted with a stump mast in natural wood and varnished. The whole model is mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard with moulded edge and cut out corners and has been painted a sky blue below the waterline and white above. The ‘Volador’ was a cutter rigged yacht with a clipper bow and counter stern. The backboard is inscribed with the name ‘Volador’ and ‘Volador. 21ft. length Class. Designed by C.P. Clayton, Esqre, Built by Messrs Camper & Nicholson. 1886.’. The ‘Volador’ was built in Gosport for Lieut. A. H. Oliver, RN.
