Scud

Scale:Unknown. A contemporary half block model of the racing yacht Scud(active 1895). The shallow draughted hull is carved from a single block of wood and painted dark grey below the waterline and a creamy white for the topsides and deck above. The hull shape has an almost flat sheer with a long pointed and narrow bow running aft to a flat midship section and finishing with a slightly raised and tapered stern with a transom. The model would suggest either a pivoting or sliding centreboard weighted by a lead bulb keel at the base. There is also a teardrop shaped rudder under the stern which was operated by a tiller. The cockpit is enclosed by a wooden coambing, rounded at the stern and finishing to a point just aft of where the single stump mast is stepped through the deck. The whole model is mounted on a wooden rectangular backboard with an edged moulding and painted a light grey, on which is inscribed in gold paint ‘"Scud" Designed by F Hemming Built by Alfred Burgoine, Kingston-on-Thames. Owner H Wolton’.
