Warship (1740); Sixth rate; Sloop; Brigantine; 12 guns
Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a Royal Navy 12-gun sixth-rate sloop (circa 1740), built plank on frame in the Georgian style. Model is decked and partially equipped including a capstan, gratings and stump masts and bowsprit. At this scale, the model represents a ship measuring 85 feet along the gun deck by 23 feet in the beam and a tonnage of approximately 200 burden.
The model is likely to be a design for a sloop rigged as a brigantine, armed with fourteen 6-pounder guns on the maindeck. The vertical timbers fixed to the outside of the bulwarks were the mountings for the smaller swivel guns. It is also fitted with oar ports between the larger gun ports and is steered by a tiller on the raised quarterdeck.
