Great Harry (circa 1560) Warship; Galleon or man-of-war; 80 guns
Scale: 1:120. A 19th-century full hull model of a four-masted 80-gun galleon or man-of-war (circa 1560), built in 'bread and butter' fashion. Model is decked, equipped and fully rigged with sails furled and set.
Although intended to portray the 'Henri Grace a Dieu' or 'Great Harry' built during the reign of Henry VIII, the bow, fine stern and reduced castles suggest a warship of a later date. Of historical interest are the topgallant sails carried on the fore and main masts, the lateen topsails and topgallants on the mizzen and the topsail on the bonaventure mizzen mast at the stern. At this scale, the model represents a ship measuring 140 feet along the gun deck by 36 feet in the beam and an approximate tonnage of 1000 burden.
This reconstruction model is recorded as having been commissioned for display at the Great Exhibition of 1851, its source apparently being a slightly earlier one, then in private hands, which is now SLR0224 .
