Plymouth (1796); Admiralty yacht
Scale 1:32. A contemporary full hull block model of the Admiralty yacht Plymouth (1796). Built in ‘bread and butter’ fashion in the Georgian style, the model is decked. An accompanying plaque is inscribed ‘1796 Plymouth 1796 Yacht, 1796 Scale 1/32. Formerly recorded as the Mercury, yacht of the Commissioners at Portsmouth, circa 1790’, together with the number ‘109’. There was no yacht of that name and the measurements do not suit any yacht built for Portsmouth. They do, however, agree perfectly with those of the 'Plymouth'. This yacht was built in Plymouth and launched in November 1796. Measuring 64 feet in length by 18 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 96. It was re-built in 1814 and eventually broken up in 1830.
