Royal/ceremonial vessel; Small craft; Admirals' barge
Scale: 1:24. A contemporary full hull model of an admiral's barge (circa 1750), built and carved from the solid in the Georgian style. Measuring 37 feet in length by 7 feet in the beam, it was rowed by a crew of up to twelve smartly dressed oarsmen, which were considered as a status symbol amongst the fleet, with the design and cost of their uniforms met by the admiral himself. The model illustrates the rich decoration both externally and internally, in particular the chequered canvas cover of the bottom boards, the same method employed in the cabins of the larger warships.
