Warship (1795); Frigate; 40-48 guns

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a 48-gun frigate (circa 1795), a fifth-rate ship of the line, built in bread and butter fashion and finished in the Georgian style. Model is partially decked and equipped including three sliding keels as designed by Captain Schank. Although the sliding keels cannot be seen on the model, winches for raising and lowering them are located close the mast positions. The purpose of the keels was to improve the sailing qualities of the ship by reducing the amount of sideways movement, known as leeway.

The model represents a ship measuring 165 feet along the gun deck by 41 feet in the beam and an approximate tonnage of 1250 (builders old measurement). The name 'Cynthia’ has been associated with this model in the past although there was no ship of that name fitted with sliding keels, the largest being ship-rigged sloops. It is thought the model represents a proposed design for a large frigate rated as a 40-gun ship but actually carrying 48 guns. Notice also that the cannons are only run out on the port side whilst the starboard side shows it sea-going trim with the gun port lids closed.
