Warship(1588); Galleon; English

Scale: 1:96. A full hull model of an English galleon (circa 1588), built in the solid and plank on frame. Model is decked, equipped and fully rigged, including details such as deck gratings, stern and bulwark decoration as well as scale figures in the rigging and on deck.

This model and the Spanish equivalent (SLR0359) have been built from a design by David White, formerly of the NMM, based upon contemporary evidence and known naval architectural design. It shows the relatively low superstructure of an English warship of the Armada period. This form reduced wind resistance and made such vessels more manoeuvrable than their opponents, enabling the English to use standoff gunnery and so avoid the boarding actions favoured by the Spanish. During this time, this vessel would have carried up to 300 mariners, 40 gunners and 150 soldiers.
