Surprise (1651); Royal/ceremonial vessel; Yacht (Royal Escape)

Scale: 1:24. A full hull plank on frame model of the yacht ‘Royal Escape’ circa 1651. The model is decked, equipped and complete with flags and is a reconstructional model, made by F. C. P. Naish in about 1947, using the recorded dimensions and a contemporary drawing by the artist Willem van de Velde.

Originally built as a fishing smack, ‘Surprise’, and measuring 30 feet in length by 14 feet in the beam, it had an approximate tonnage of 29 tons burden. It was in this vessel that King Charles II made good his escape to France after the battle of Worcester in 1651. At his restoration in 1660, it was bought by him and renamed ‘Royal Escape’ and used by him as a yacht. The model shows the ‘Royal Escape’ as converted to a yacht considerably embellished with a royal coat of arms on the stern and carved decoration around the gunports and companionways.
