Warship (1660); Fourth rate; 50 guns

Scale: 1:24. A contemporary full hull model of a 50-gun (circa 1660) two-decker ship of the line. The model is decked, equipped and rigged, flying the Red Ensign and Union flag. Although the model is built plank on frame and rather roughly built, it represents a ship measuring approximately 115 feet along the gun deck by 31 feet in the beam, and a tonnage of 600 burden.

The date of this model is uncertain since the design and construction of this type of ship would be no later than 1645. However, the royal arms on the stern decoration and crowned lion figurehead on the bow suggest a date later than 1660. Traditionally, this model is thought to represent the ‘Rupert’ (1666) but this cannot be since it had a greater length overall and carried 66 guns. It is thought to be one of the earliest examples of a rigged contemporary scale model of a warship in existence. All traces of the original running rigging disappeared after extensive restoration was carried out at the Museum in 1939 when the model was completely re-rigged.
