Warship; 44 guns
Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a 44-gun two-decker (circa 1666) built plank on frame in the Navy Board style. The model is decked and partially equipped and mounted on a modern wooden baseboard. At this scale, the model represents a ship measuring 122 feet along the gun deck, a beam of 31 feet and an approximate tonnage of 500 burden.
Although it has ‘Bristol 1666’ written on the stern, it has been difficult to identify the model with any certainty because of the conflicting evidence. The dimensions are very similar to those of the ‘Nantwich’ built at Bristol in 1654 and wrecked in 1666, although it may be a preliminary design for the ‘St Patrick’, built at Bristol in 1666. The model is complete with the wreathed gunports and small ports along the lower gun deck for rigging sweeps.
