'Zeven Provincien', 76 to 80-guns
Scale: 1:33. A full hull model of the ‘Zeven Provincien’ (1665), a Dutch 76 to 80-gun two-decker ship of the line. The model is decked, equipped and rigged with sails set. The Dutch modelmaker, Jungblut, had previously made a larger scale model of the ‘Zeven Provincien’ that was destroyed by fire, and made this version to replace it. Correspondence on file dated 29 July 1937 suggested that this model was built on the understanding that the Dutch Maritime Museum would purchase it for 1000 florins, but a lack of funds prevented it.
The model is inaccurate in many ways, particularly in scale, unlike Jungblut's larger first version. It is possible that errors were made when the dimensions were reduced. It is made from wood dated circa 1600. The maker’s main references were Nicholaes Witsen’s ‘Architectura Navalis et Regimen Nauticum’ (Amsterdam 1690) and contemporary drawings by van de Velde.
The ‘Zeven Provincien’ was built by the Admiralty of the Maas at Rotterdam and launched in 1665. Measuring 149 feet along the gun deck and a beam of 43 feet, it had an approximate tonnage of 1100 burden. It was Admiral De Ruyter’s flagship at the actions of 1666 and of 1672-73. At the Battle of Barfleur in 1692, the ‘Zeven Provincien’ led the Anglo-Dutch line against the French and was severely damaged. It was eventually broken up in 1694.
