Warship; Sixth rate; Sloop; 30 guns
Scale: 1:72. A contemporary full hull model of a 30-gun sixth-rate sloop (circa 1710), built plank on frame in the Navy Board style. The model is decked, partially equipped and complete with stump masts. The model is unusual in that it represents a flush-decked ship where there is no raised forecastle and quarter deck. At this scale, it depicts a vessel with a gun deck length of 111 feet by 30 feet in the beam and an approximate tonnage of 410 burden. The model’s dimensions are close to those of the 30-gun ships of the period 1698-1711, but there is no record of a flush deck vessel of this class being built.
Of special note is the deeply carved decoration over the stern galleries and is typical of the early 18th century. This rather rounded and gilded finish was soon to be replaced by the much crisper finish of the early Georgian period with the improvement in tools and use of different woods playing a major part.
