Warship (1710); Sixth rate; Sloop; 20 guns
Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a 20-gun sixth-rate sloop (circa 1710), built plank on frame solid core in the Georgian style. Model is decked, planked and fully equipped and rigged, and is mounted on its original wooden crutches. At this scale the model represents a vessel measuring 93 feet along the gun deck by 24 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 250 burden. This, together with the ‘Barrington model’ (SLR0396), is the earliest example in the collection with largely intact early 18th-century rigging. It also is one of the earliest changes in the style of model construction with a fully planked lower hull, as opposed to the open framing of the Navy Board style.
Because of the highly detailed finish of this model, it is quite probable that it was made for presentation to a high-ranking civil servant or naval officer, since the time and cost to construct this model would have financially uneconomical as a proposal
