Warship; Sixth rate; Sloop; 20 guns

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model, of a 20-gun sixth-rate sloop (circa 1712), built plank on frame in the Navy Board style. The model is decked and partially equipped with a capstan in the waist and galley chimney in the forecastle. The model depicts a ship measuring 94 feet along the gun deck by 26 feet in the beam and an approximate tonnage of 250 burden. It illustrates a typical 20-gun sloop of the early 18th century, a large number of which were built between 1711 and 1713. An unusual feature of this model is the fitting of the gunport lids to the ports in the waist. Normally, these ports were devoid of any doors or lids, and this model includes the normal type that hinged upwards as well as the more unusual that opened sideways. The size and layout of the hull is typical of the sloops or ‘cruiser’ of the early 18th century with the long quarterdeck and no poop.
