Warship (1715-19); First rate; 100 guns
Scale: 1:42.6. A contemporary full hull model of a 100-gun three-decker first-rate ship of the line (circa 1715), built in the Georgian style. The model is decked, equipped and rigged. Much of the rigging is contemporary while the remainder was restored and completed in the Museum in 1936. The unusual scale has been calculated by the vessel’s draught marks. At this scale, it represents a ship measuring 174 feet along the gun deck by 47 feet in the beam with an approximate tonnage of 1750 burden.
The vessel has the length of a 100-gun ship with the beam of a 90-gunner. This, together with other inconsistencies and the personal nature of the decoration (the arms of Montagu and Buccleuch appear in several places) indicate this may be an imaginary ship and the model made for presentation purposes. In some respects it resembles the ‘Royal George’ of 1715 but the solid middle and upper wales would suggest a date later than 1719.
