Ludlow Castle; Warship; Forth rate; 40-guns

Scale: 1:48. A block design model of the ‘Ludlow Castle’, a 40-gun, small two-decker. The name ‘Ludlow Castle’ is marked on the starboard broadside. The model’s dimensions are about those of the Establishment of 1719 for 40-gun ships.

The ‘Ludlow Castle’ was launched at Woolwich in February 1724. It was 124 feet long and 33 feet in the beam. It carried 250 men, and weighed 595 tons burden. It carried twenty 12-pound guns on their gun decks and twenty 6-pound guns on their upper decks.

It first saw service on the Newfoundland convoys, but spent most of its active life in the Caribbean. It was on the Barbados station from 1731 to 1733, reinforced Vernon’s fleet in 1740, and moved to the Jamaica station in 1742. The ‘Ludlow Castle’ was hulked at Antigua in 1744 before being sold in 1750.
