Warship (1730-40); Spanish; 60 guns
Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a 60-gun, two-decker ship of the line. It is built plank on frame in the Navy Board style. The model has a cutaway, and is decked and equipped. The date and nationality of the ship are both uncertain. It is not a British ship: the oar ports were not found in British ships of this size. It is possibly Spanish and has been tentatively identified as the 'Nueva Espana', built at Havana around 1740. The eagle and snake on the stern may be derived from the Mexican coat of arms.
Spanish 60-gun ships were of a very similar size to their British counterparts. A Spanish 60-gunner was 142 feet by 40 and weighed 950 tons burden, while British ships (of the 1719 Establishment) were 144 by 39, and 951 tons.
