Rupert (1740); Warship; Fourth rate; 60 guns

Scale: 1:48. A block design model of the ‘Rupert’ (1740), a 60-gun, two-decker ship of the line. The model has dimensions very close to those of the Establishment of 1733 for 60-gun ships and was very similar (except for the double wales) to the other models of ships on that Establishment: ‘Worcester’, ‘Augusta’ and ‘Princess Mary’.

The ‘Rupert’ served in the Mediterranean and Jamaica before being rebuilt. The new ‘Rupert’ was launched at Sheerness dockyard in October 1740. It was 144 feet long but, as a 1733 Establishment 60-gunner, it was both wider (at 41½ feet) and heavier (at 1060 tons burden) than the ‘60s’ of the 1719 Establishment. It carried twenty-four 24-pound guns on its gun deck, twenty-six 9-pounders on its upper deck, eight 6-pounders on its quarterdeck and two 6-pounders on the forecastle.

The ‘Rupert’ joined Norris’s fleet in 1741, and was stationed in the Mediterranean between 1743 and 1746. It was a hospital ship at Plymouth from 1755 until 1760, and was broken up in 1769.
