Grafton (1742); Warship; Third rate; 70 guns
Scale: 1:48. A builder’s block model of the ‘Grafton’ (1742), a 70-gun, two-decker ship of the line. The name ‘Grafton’ is marked on the stern. The name ‘Grafton’ suggests the ship built in 1750, but the model represents an earlier and rather smaller ship built on the Establishment of 1741. That ship was 154 feet long and 44 feet in the beam and weighed 1291 tons burden. The anomaly arose because the ‘Grafton’ was commissioned originally under the 1741 Establishment, but completed under the 1745 Establishment. Although the final ship was 160 feet by 45 feet and weighed 1414 tons, the model represents the original design for this vessel.
