Prince (1750); Warship; Second rate; 90-guns

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary block model of the ‘Prince’ (1750), a 90-gun, three-decker ship of the line. The number ‘51’ [previous catalogue number] is on a plaque on the starboard broadside. An accompanying label reads: ‘Prince 90 1750. Catalogued (1923) under No. 51 as Prince ex Triumph, Built 1698. Dimensions are those of a 90-gun ship on the Establishment of 1741. There were only two such ships, the ”Prince” and ”Ramillies”. Draught No. 327 confirms the identification while No. 263 shows the ”Ramillies” was slightly different the starboard side of the model shows all wales double but it was very unlikely that the ship was ever built thus’. The stem post is broken.

Built as the ‘Triumph’ in 1698, it was renamed ‘Prince’ in 1714. It measured 160 feet along the gun deck by 46 feet in the beam, displacing 1482 tons. In 1750 it was taken apart and rebuilt with slightly larger dimensions at Chatham by J. Ward. In 1759 it took part in Boscawen’s victory at the Battle of Lagos during the Seven Years War. It was broken up at Plymouth in 1775.
