Princess Royal (1773); Warship; Second rate; 90-guns
Scale: 1:60. A contemporary block design model of the second rate ‘Princess Royal’ (1773), a 90-gun, three-decker ship of the line. An accompanying plaque is inscribed ‘Princess Royal 90 guns 1773. Built at Portsmouth, Broken up in 1807. Dimensions - Gun Deck 177ft 6in Beam 50 ft 6 in scale 1/60 (1/5" to 1") Armament increased to 98 guns in 1778 by the addition of 8 guns on the quarterdeck’.
Commissioned in 1777, the ‘Princess Royal’ was John Byron’s flagship at the unsuccessful action against the French off Grenada in 1779. The following year it took part in the Battle of Martinique as Hyde Parker’s flagship. In 1782 it assisted in the relief of Gibraltar. In the 1790s it was stationed in the Mediterranean and took part in actions off Genoa and Hyeres in 1795. From 1800 it was stationed in the Channel until it was broken up in 1807.
