Service vessel; Gunboat
Scale: 1:12. A contemporary full hull model of a 1-gun gunboat (circa 1770). The model is decked and equipped. The numbers ‘27/42’ are painted on the deck. The model was previously in the Rotunda Museum, Woolwich.
From the model the vessel measured 39 feet in length (overall) by 13 feet in the beam, displacing approximately 30 tons (builders own measurement). It was armed with one 24-pounder.
This is one of a class of shallow-draught gunboats built for the use of the Army on Lake Champlain, Canada, in 1777. The gun was pivoted and mounted on a platform in the bows. In addition there may have been four swivel guns mounted on the stocks at each corner of the waist. The boat was propelled by 16 oarsmen.
