Schooner ‘Peggy’
Scale: 1:12. A modern exhibition model of the two-masted schooner ‘Peggy’ (circa 1791), built plank on frame, rigged with mast and yards only. Measuring 26 feet in length by 7 feet, she was built at Castletown, Isle of Man as a workboat, although an Admiralty licence dated 1793 stated it was for pleasure only. She could either be rowed or sailed and was fitted with a drop keel. Incredibly, it was discovered walled up in a harbour-side cellar in the 1950s in virtually original condition. As to why it was hidden away was to do with the fact that other vessels of this type were involved in smuggling, and so this was done to evade capture. The ‘Peggy’ is currently on display in the Manx Maritime Museum, Castletown.
