Warship; Sixth rate; Sloop; 24 guns
Scale: 1:60. A contemporary full hull model of a 24-gun sixth rate sloop (circa 1798), built plank on frame in the Georgian style. The model is decked and equipped.
This model probably represents an exercise in craftsmanship rather than an actual ship. It has a simple ‘fiddle’ type figurehead as used after 1795 and the bulwarks round the quarterdeck have been built up. The capstan is rather large and the double steering wheel is probably not accurate for a ship this small. In dimensions and armament it is close to a 24-gun small frigate or ‘post-ship’ of about 1795, though the details and hull shape are not accurate.
Underneath the base there is an inscription: ‘Frigate 1795-8 A.J Barnes Jan 1950 FE’.
