Washington (1795); Warship: Dutch; 74 guns

Scale: 1:41. A contemporary dividing full hull model of the Washington (1797), a Dutch 74-gun, two-decker ship of the line. The model is decked and equipped. Two plaques read ‘Washington Dutch 74 gun ship 1797 Gun deck 165ft Beam 45ft 4ins Cat no.1797-1 Scale 1-41’. The decks and fittings on the model are fully detachable to show the lower gun decks and details of construction. It is very finely finished. It may have been made in the Netherlands for training purposes. The scale is unusual and may suggest that the model was built without reference to plans.

The model has a very unusual scale which cannot be referred to any reasonable fraction of an inch, even with a Dutch foot of 11 inches. Furthermore, the contemporary plan belonging to the model is on an equally inexplicable scale of 1/47. There is also a handwritten manuscript with explanatory notes and key to the labelled parts, all of which is in Dutch. The masts, spars and fighting tops are stored with the model and were never assembled into a finished model.
