Framed Royal Naval Exhibition diploma, presented to C. Higginson
A Royal Naval Exhibition diploma, presented to C. Higginson, in Chelsea, 1891. In the top centre of the diploma is the face of Queen Victoria surmounted by a coat of arms. There are two columns on either side. The left side are draped with names of famous naval vessels beneath Neptune, who is sitting on a pedestal of Nelsonian period gun-deck underneath. The right hand side is draped with names of naval victories with Britannia underneath and the view of a modern gun-deck underneath. There is a diving scene at the centre bottom of the frame, the head of Nelson in a garter can be seen. Inscribed on the garter are the words "NAVIGATION, EXPLORATION, RECREATION, ORDNANCE, SEAMANSHIP, CONSTRUCTION", along with names of naval commanders. Inscribed on the diploma are the words "CHELSEA 1891 ROYAL NAVAL EXHIBITION. THIS IS TO CERTIFY THAT THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE HAVE AWARDED THIS COMMEMORATIVE DIPLOMA TO C. HIGGINSON ESQ EXHIBITOR".
