36 Gun Frigate

Scale 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a 36-gun fifth-rate frigate (circa 1801). Constructed in the Georgian style, it is decked and equipped and it represents a ship measuring 137 feet along the lower deck by 38 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 880 (builders old measurement). The upper deck was armed with twenty-six 18-pounder guns, eight 9-pounders on the quarterdeck and two 12-pounders on the forecastle.

The model is mounted on launching cradles and the fittings on deck include stovepipe, hammock irons, a double wheel and capstan. The hull has individual planks glued to a wooden core and typically bone has been employed to highlight such fittings as the deadeyes, capstan drumhead, wheel supports and the windows and glazing on the stern galleries.

This model seems to illustrate something of a hybrid design for a frigate, with dimensions similar to ships of 1780–85. However, the appearance of the enclosed waist and solid bulwarks, introduced to give more protection for the gun crews, with square-cut ends are a characteristic of 1800 or later.
