Warship (1806); First rate; 100 guns; Funeral Catafalque
A contemporary full hull model of a funeral catafalque (1806). Model is decked and equipped. It was probably made by a prisoner of war and is an interpretation of a large three-decker, on which is carried the ornately decorated coffin and sarcophagus. It may have been an original ship model made as a POW style and was later converted, possibly by the original maker, by the addition of the canopy and coffin to represent Nelson's funeral car.
On the four sides of the canopy is inscribed ‘PALMAM OUI MERUIT FERAT / TRAFALGAR / HOSTE DEVICTO REQUIEVIT / NILE’. The first phrase is Nelson’s motto, ‘let he who has earned it bear the palm’, and the second translates as ‘the enemy having been defeated, he rested’. The carved decoration has been executed in boxwood, whilst the hull has been sheathed in copper below the waterline.
