Newquay (1812); Service vessel; Pilot boat; Gig; Cornish gig
Scale: 1:12. A full hull model of the 'Newquay' (1812), a Cornish pilot gig. Model is complete with thwarts, stretchers, bottom boards and a full set of oars. The model is complete with a plaque inscribed ‘Frank Peters boat builder St Mawes.’ The name ‘Newquay’ is painted on port and starboard bows.
Built by William Peters of St Mawes in 1812, the ‘Newquay’ had a long career and was still racing in 1968, taking part in sixteen races that year. It was still in use in leisure rowing with the Newquay Rowing Club in the late 1990s. Constructed in clinker fashion, these boats were very long and narrow, measuring 29 feet in length by 4 feet in the beam. A practical feature of the gig was that it was built for speed, as the first boat to reach a ship requiring a pilot would pick up the business.
